WHAT SIZE DOG COLLAR SHOULD I BUY FOR MY DOG?

DOG COLLARS ARE VITAL IN KEEPING YOUR DOG SAFE.  THEY PROVIDE A VISIBLE AND ACCESSIBLE PLACE FOR YOUR DOG TAG, AND KEEP THEM SAFE AND SECURE ON A LEAD.  BUT WE SHOULD ALSO CONSIDER THAT YOUR DOGS COLLAR MUST BE BOTH COMFORTABLE, FIT PROPERLY AND BE SUITABLE FOR THE SIZE AND WEIGHT OF YOUR DOG.

At Moo Moo & Bear we find the most common return to us is due to buying the incorrect width collar, and we want to help you get it right first time round.

When you invest in a new dog collar, we want to ensure that your dog collar is appropriate for both their neck size, and suitable for your activity for your dog, be that training, walking or playing.

WHY IS COLLAR WIDTH IMPORTANT?

In general, thicker collars will provide more support, making them the best choice, especially for larger and stronger dogs. But it is important to select a width that will be suitable for your dog.

With wider collars, the force is distributed over a greater surface area, preventing injury, reducing pressure and can even protect your dog’s neck.  Repeated stresses in this area can lead to long term damage including damaging the thyroid glands, salivery glands and neck tissue.  Wider collars are a great choice if you regularly attach a lead to your dog’s collar.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT WIDTH DOG COLLAR

There is no science in the fact that smaller dogs tend to have smaller necks, so popping a wide 25mm width dog collar on a small breed may not be the best option, but choose appropriately for the size of dog with possible damage to their neck in the forefront of your mind.  Similarly a large dog would mostly suit the 25mm width (if not wider) to ensure that no damage would be done should they wish to pull on their collar and lead.

It is generally a size of dog and weight of dog which determines the most suitable width of collar.

It is worth bearing in mind the weight and bulk of a wider collar.  Not only is the width more, but so is the clasp or buckle, and this is where our customers commonly get things wrong.

We use the industry standard practice of collars sizing, using the width of the webbing used, whether external or internal, and the buckle also corresponds to the webbing width.

We do not want you to be disappointed with your order when it arrives, so hopefully this will help you decide the best choice and suitability for your dog.  Please note the buckle size increase with each width increase.

DOG COLLAR SAFETY

  • Moo Moo & Bear ALWAYS advises wearing your dog collar for walks only.  We do not advise your dog wears a collar in the home unless fully supervised at all times.

  • It is the owners responsibility to check both the suitabliity of the collar for your dog, and to check daily for wear and tear.

  • If your dog pulls, please consider the use of a harness.  Collars can still be worn for identification purposes.

Do let us know if you found this helpful in your choice of dog collar width.   We are always trying to improve the shopping experience of our customers.

Measure your dog’s neck: Use a flexible tape measure to determine the circumference of your dog’s neck. Add 1-2 inches to this measurement to ensure a comfortable fit.
